Link: N/AAny chance you can add the Cromenco to your timeline - it was the first time I used 8" floppies. My favourite PC at the start of the 80s was the Vector MZ. I managed to get about 14 colour video boards into one and developed a multiscreen system for displaying betting odds in OTBs. I had to do it using Z80 assember as memory was tight. We got our own S100 system designed for the job and hundreds of them are still in use today - they've been running pretty much non-stop for 24 years. Try that with a Windows box!

Link: N/AYou have an amazing website, and I spent a couple hours going back down memory lane.
I was very supprised at the fact that you do not have the Amiga 500 in your timeline. The only mention of it is on the "AMiga TImeline" that Commodore "announced it". No release date, or comments about the A-500 on your site. This system was a huge sucess, and was far ahead of anything else on the market at the time. At the time we had a A-500 Users group in the area with 42 members that would meet once a month. This was in a fairly small town, Stuart, Florida, Pop. 10,000 at the time. When I finally had to ditch my A-500, it was maxed out with a 40 MB hard drive, 5 megs of memory, and running a Motorolla 020 accelerator board processor. I did this to "Upgrade" to an IBM based system, with Win 3.1. The Amiga's GUI was FAR ahead of Win 3.1 for sure :)
I hope to see the A-500 fit into your timeline in the future.
Thanks for a FANTASTIC site!

Link: N/AI bought this "Baby AT 286" manufactured by National Microsystems in Norcross Georgia. It is a Portable, has been referred to as a "lunchbox". In 1990. I even have the original factory test read-out. It has a gas plasma screen. It came with the big floppy drive and I added the small floppy drive in 1995, other than that, the padded carrying case, manuals.
I have been trying to track down this company and can't find any information for it. Haven't seen any info anywhere about this computer either. Of course it is DOS and an IBM Bios system. The dimensions listed are 16.1"W x9.1"Hx7.5"D, 24lbs. The keyboard unlocks and reveals the adjustable gas plasma screen. If anyone else has one I'd be interested in hearing from them. It was a great computer in its day!

Link: N/AI have a small box of commodore 64 tapes
that my dad used to have, that I have recently found in his old stuff. I have no idea what is on most of them as they are unlabeled. There is a 2 tape set that appears to be the operating system, but the rest are probaly programs my dad wrote.
He had a trading post in bush Alaska and
tried to bring it into the "computer age".
I am interested in sending these tapes to anyone that may be interested in them. If they are of value to anyone I will send them to you by US Mail at no cost to yourself. I just hate to throw them away in the garbage. I only wished I had known
of this site when I had thrown away the
old commodore 64. I would have gladly given it away. I may have some of the old
"quick brown fox" stuff still laying around also.
So if anyone is interested, just email your
mailing address and I will send to you.

Link: N/AMy cousin Dean Moses wrote utilities for the Jupitor ace. He disasembled the entire ROM.
I remember I could not afford one. He wrote a forth emulator for the sinclair so I could understand the Forth stack, you know "2 4 +" enter, then .
"6"
I remember one day talking with Dean him telling me that the Ace did not have high resolution graphics like the spectrum. I thought this was strange as user definable graphics were available, in fact you could re-design the entire set on the ace. I remember saying well you should be able to emulate this putting one graphic beside another after redesigning the graphic. A week later he had cracked it! The software was sold commercially, before long Tim Hartnel was in touch with Dean. (Tim worked on the Zx81).
The Jupitor Ace produced exeptional power for its memory capacity. This computer was an un-sung hero of its time.

It stored 450kb on a single side of a regular floppy disk and I think the ram was about 256k.
I was able to transfer by modem and run GWbasic programs written on IBM pc's with just a few mods.
The monitor finally died in about 1989, and that was that.
Taught me to drive CPM/80 though.

Link: N/AFantastic site! Can't wait 'til you expand upon (or include at all) some of the other machines I got my hands on in the eighties. These would include: The BBC Model A, BBC Model B, the Acorn Electron and Acorn Atom (not to mention the gorgeous failure that was the Acorn Archimedes - the first commonly available RISC computer.) Whilst these may not have made an impact in American markets, because of their almost total dominance of the British (and to a lesser extent, European) educational institution for a few years, an entire generation of kids grew up (probably) more computer aware and literate (for their age) than the Altair hobbyists a decade before. I am pretty sure that thanks to their insidious presence my generation in particular left school wanting to own, build, program or work with computers. Their impact on computing history would be grossly maligned if this site did not, at least, tip it's hat to them.
Other machines I owned/borrowed/used in the eighties include the Sinclairs ZX81/Spectrum/Spectrum-128 and the extremely weird Sinclair QL, the Dragons 32 and 64, Commodores VIC20/64 and the '16+4' (remember the four arrow shaped buttons anyone?) the Jupiter Ace and Oric Atmos (that one must have been the original white elephant!)
And then there was that strahnge experiment amongst a group of Japanese electronics giants, the 'MSX.' Each the same (in basic features and software) and yet each different (in extras or intended market.)
Finally, although I never managed to personally use one, some serious kudos must be given to the Atari ST, which - as I understand it - nearly rivalled the Amiga for the rown of the Power User's Computer.
Just my thoughts... keep up the otherwise excellent work SysOp!

Prior to Byte Magazine, there was a magazine dedicated to early Apple efforts and their loyal base. The magazine was called In-Cider, published in Peterbourgh, N.H. by a husband and wife team. Well, they ended up in a divorce and the magazine was handed over to the wife as part of the settlement. The husband was forbidden to publish a magazing / newsletter that targetted the Apple markets so he went one step further. He wanted to take a bite out of her publication and thus created BYTE Magazine, which went on for years as the premier publication for computing. In the late 90's, McGraw Hill aquired the publication and moved its office to Burlington, MA and cut staff as computers were starting to look all the same. Ultimately, the magazine portion ceased to exhist and was forever closed down.

Link: N/AI was fortunately enough to be 11 years old when my grandfather decided to let me play with his brand new Sinclair ZX80. I was loading programs off of tape and modifying them faster than he could say "NO" He was amazed at my fearless adoption of one of the first home computers.
I then moved onto his Osbourne I which I still have(display does not work), followed by the Sinclair ZX-Spectrum which I still have up in my attic with about 50 tape based games and a replacment shell which has a more substancial keyboard.
Mother then bought Apple IIe for me and an Apple IIc for herself. Years later I moved onto the PC.
I still have very fond memories of the Sinclair ZX-spectrum and have since found emulators that allow me to sample those old games. Perhaps one day I will get out the tapes and convert them for use with the emulators.
Great site and interesting historical subject matter. I will be back!

Let me just say you have one of the best sites I have ever seen. I lived and grew up with many of these computers. My first to use was an Apple II when I was 5.. *MY* first computer was a Timex sinclair 1000... my first REAL machine was an ADAM (and I always used to say how much better it was than the Commodore 64 and Apple of the time)... I upgraded to an Osborne 1 (at the ripe old age of 14).. and then went PC at age 16... saw the light with Linux, and have been sold on Mac OS X... I've been around :) This site was a walk down memory lane for me, and I visit it every day. Nobody today knows how cool things used to be, when we had competition between computer companies. Keep this site up!
I have a few pics for you if you want them, place them in your ADs section if you like... the first is an original ADAM ad which I dont think you have, and the second is a picture of a Zaxxon box... the Zaxxon game for the ADAM.
One of the cool things about ADAM was the fact they were owned by Coleco, who was a video game vendor. When Coleco would make a game for the ADAM, they put it in a little box, a box that looked just like the arcade upright machine...
Grab the photos at:
http://homepage.mac.com/michael.pike/vintagecomputers/
click the picture for the big version. Let me know if you want them, and when you get them, as I will remove them after you put them online (if you want them).
Keep this site up, it's a true treasure of history!

It was a fine piece of equipment with two 8.5" floppies, the cpm operating system on the A drive, with the B drive strictly for data storage. Sadly, Xerox never made an effort to market their product, feeling that mainframes were a much more viable alternative. And does anyone remember where Steve Jobs got the idea for the Mac?

After months of research in 1975, I narrowed my choices down to the SWTPC 6800 and the DG Z80. DG had several techincal benefits including a dedicated memory bus, i/o bus and cpu bus. I still have the original system I built then plus 4 others I inherited. Mine was built from as much spare/scrap parts I could find (including a power supply built from scratch), kit parts and military surplus. It came to life with all of 2K RAM. The O/S only used 1500 bytes, leaving me with 512 bytes to do anyting I wanted. And I did. Sooo many memories.........

we are working on a comedy series over here at talkback - basically a pastiche of the old British technology programme "Tomorrow's World" specifically circa 1980. A script is currently being written which includes a fictitious military super computer - interest has been expressed in the stylistic beauty of the Osbourne 1 and also the TRS-80 model III... I expect you would not be interested in hiring your computers to our production but I wonder if you could advise me of any easy way to get hold of such rare computers for our temporary purposes. We do have full insurance public liability and otherwise. We start filming on the 13th September for 6 weeks. I will attempt e-bay and also explore all your links but if you could advise me in any way I would be very grateful. If you are interested there is information about our first series on the www.bbc.co.uk. This was a slightly different format in that it was a pastiche on the open university programmes of the late seventies. Thanking you in anticipation for any help you can give me.

Unfortunately I can't recall if it was in '81 or '82 that this pricing chage occurred, but since the timelime shows the TS1000 being sold in '82, I would have to say it must have been '81 that it happened. And if memory serves me correctly, it would have been June or July.

Although I didn't see any mention of John Titor on your website, by now you may have heard of him and his mission to retrieve an IBM 5100 or 5110 from 1975 to return to his time, 2036.
Okay, so it's a wacky story, but a fun one. I operate a site about Titor at http://johntitor.strategicbrains.com I've been contacted by a TV production company that wants to do a story about John Titor, including testing his veracity. We have an artifact to test, a fabric label taken from a 5100 machine (not a 5100), that supposedly was taken directly from 1975 to 2000 in Titor's time machine (in which case that 5110 label would have had to come from a prototype machine since the 5110's weren't released to the public until 1978 or so). Presumably that 5110 label would have aged less than a label that didn't travel in time, and the producers would like to have it age-tested. In order to determine whether the label which is allegedly from John Titor has aged 25 years or not, we need another 5110 label to compare it to. The precise method of scientific comparison hasn't been determined yet but it could involve chemical changes in the fabric, the ink, or the adhesive. We hope to be able to do nondestructive testing. The reason I'm writing you guys is to ask if you have a 5110 in your collection and would you lend us the label for scientific testing. Or do you know where we might obtain a 5110 label?
Regards,
Karl S.

This computer needs to go to a good home, a home that will use and take care of this system. I am ignorant as to what these computers sell for, so best offer gets to own this. We are in Oregon and would like who ever buys this to pay the shipping costs. This computer works great with the one disk we do have. I hooked everything up with ease. It is clean and the kids are not to touch it. Please email me at mcmcdannell(-at-)yahoo.com and I will email you with more contact information.

Link: N/AHi,
Great site!
A quick correction, sort of! The Kyo-85 did not come
with ADDRS and SCHEDL enabled in stock form.
If you look at the picture of the Kyo-85 you'll see they
are indeed missing.
However these programs were on the ROM and could
be enabled if you knew the trick, unfortunately I have
lost most of my Kyo-85 documentation and don't
remember how to do it! Also I've forgotten how to
make the Kyo-85 work with the Tandy TPDD1 disk
drive, I remember needing to change a switch setting
on the drive but again can't remember the details!
If anyone can clue me in on these two issues it
would be greatly appreciated.

The 6502 Rockwell uP is used with 10pc of 2114 Ram chips, EMCO EPROMS (these dated 1987) on a daughter board using a 74LS138 decoder. The controls used 6820 PIA chips (3 of them). I have not yet looked at the video output sections to see if they used Motorola as Robert Wilson indicated, but there are many similarites to the 'AIM-65' machine. EMCO, an Austrian company still making CNC, uses G-code interface like modern CNC mills. The x-y-z Axis use Stepper Motors run with transistor power boards. The Video output shows the current programming up to 210 steps of about 16 bytes per line or about 4K ram

Link: N/A*blink* My god. I never knew such computers existed. But yeah. I'm a technology baby. Heck every single computer here was made before I was even born! It's amazing how far technology has come, and even more amzing the diversity between early computers. I'm especially surprised with the advanced level of the Amiga 1000. It's too bad many of these died out. Hm. Well, I don't suppose they'll ever truly die out. In fact, my Junior High still runs a bunch of Apple III Plus(es).

Link: N/AMy elder brother has leukemia and not long to live. He has about eight (8) TI 99/4A computers he wishes to sell before his death if possible. There seems to be no market in our area. He also has substantial amount of peripheral hardware and programs but no monitors. Most of these units have never been used. I would be interested in hearing from anyone interested in buying.

What about pre 1975? The Burroughs 2000 and the IBM 650 and a third whose name escapes me but all three were available in the late 50's and I checked them out for the company I was with at the time. Not too much later an IBM 1620 supported our unit at the VA Biostatistics Research Support Center in Hines, Illinois. We were quite up to date for the time running Fortran with Format.

It is, in retrospect, quite hilarious. It was not so at the time thanks to the expectations in my office.

Link: N/AThe arcticle on the Compaq Portable is very informative, but doesn't contain the info I'm looking for. I have a Compaq Portable 286. (Not the Portable II, this is a full-sized portable, in the same case as the original Compaq Portable, but powered by a 286 processor.) I was wondering if anybody had any info on it, such as when built, for how long, how many etc.? Any help is apreciated.
