Very nice project and presentation. My first PC was an Ohio Scientific 4P. I later launched a successful career using the TRS Model II.
This generation just looks perplexed if you attempt to give any history pre-Apple or even the IBM PC!
Thanks and best wishes for you business/project.

Hi, I have a historical vintage project in mind. I need every BYTE magazine before 1990 that I can get my hands on. I have about 30 spotty issue (literally and figuratively). Some are a bit spotted w/mold LOL and they don't form a contiguous chain of dates. If you can help out, I'd greatly appreciate it. For the more average issues I'd be willing to pay a modest amount per magazine. The older ones more, but I ain't a rich guy. THANKS!

God, how does one change chunky soup to planar soup and the other way around? just joking about graphics. -david lowenstein
well, chunky soup is soup with meat in it in chunks. planar soup, to follow the analogy, is meat in the soup in thin slices. well, to reverse that, one must scrunch up the meat. -God, wierd idea, though.
yeah. just being bizzare. -david l.
well, you are very welcome, dave! -God

The IMSAI 8080 page states "Like all early S-100 based systems, the IMSAI is really just a large metal case with a power supply, and numerous slots to insert the expansion cards." But this is not true. The front panels of both the IMSAI and the Altair make them more than that.

Anyone have information about a Bytex ATS 1000 network analyzer? Re: North Star Horizon Wooden case.
NorthStar replaced the wooden case because too many floppies were being erased. Most people naturally put their monitors on top of the case, and the magnetic field was pretty strong when you first turned it on. If you left your disks in the floppy drives, they were getting erased from the initial power on sequence of the computer due to lack of shielding from the magnetic fields of the monitor resting on the wooden case.
I have a photo someplace of a Vector 1++ (2 floppy drive version). I donated the computer away in the 80's and now I'm sad I did :-(

Boy, oh Boy, does this site bring back fond memories.
My first computer was the SOL-20 kit, then an Apple II (bootleg mother board I had to build), then the AMIGA 1000, 500, and the 2000.
Computing hasn't been as much FUN since! (even with my Apple iMac)
I use to contract with IBM (RTP,NC)in the mid eighties, designing features for the PC, and the PC AT, that my AMIGA already had.

I know it wasn't big (especially in Canada), but I'm a bit disappointed that, with such a thorough review of older systems, there isn't any information here on computer brands using the MS-X standard.
I noticed that NEC and Tomy made the list; is there a particular reason for the MSX omission?
Sysop says: I just don't have any MSX systems yet.

Epson HX-20. I cut my teeth on this machine and the language included was not Microsoft Basic. It was Epson Basic, 95% the same as other Basics but enough of a difference to make it incompatible with anything else. They were very proud of the screen which could be flipped so that a quarter of the actual screen could be seen at any one time. This caused me endless confusion.

It has been in storage since I quit using it and all of it except 1 (5.25) disk drive worked fine when I packed it away. I was one that just about everything that came out for sale for the Commodore-I had to have. Not a question, just an addendum to the Radio Shack MC-10 entry. 1983 was also the year when the video game market collapsed; there were too many systems, Atari had made serious mis-steps (the 5200 bombed, the "E.T." game was a total failure.) There was overlap between the games and the home computers (some people only bought home computers because of the better games they could play!)....I think the Colecovision Adam was the perfect symbol of the overlap and limitations of the home machines, especially their design flaws; that weird printer/power module, the boot tape that could get demagnetized. The MC-10 was just another face in the crowd....it did not help that none of these machines ran compatible BASICs outside of models made by the same manufacturer, or that most of the 1982-3 machines were underpowered and inflexible compared to the IBM AT/XT which had arrived a year earlier. It was a fun time if you were a kid who liked computers (as I was), but I would've hated working for a firm that rose and fell in less than a decade.

I have a Lexicomp Gradebook 2000. I picket this up on ebay about 8 years ago, and didn't save the information that the original seller provided. It is a handheld device most likely made in the early 1990's. It is 9"x4 1/2"x1 1/4" and approximately 1.3 pounds, with a PCMCIA slot. It appears to be similar to the Zeos Pocket PC/Phillips HC-101 Handy PC/Spectrum P2000 clones. Has anyone heard of this computer? I cannot find any information on the internet. I was sorting through my stock of old chips accumulated over many years in the electronics design industry. I came across two ROCKWELL AIM65/40MATH ROMS. This is ROCKWELL's floating point package for the AIM65/40 and RM 65 SBC. They can use either assembly language or FORTH. They were purchased 1983 for a project that never got off the ground. The Osborne 1 has a very small screen, but it also has a video output port. By using an inexpensive adapter, a standard monitor ( 80*25 characters) can be connected. It is also said that its floppy capacity is too small. But at that time, files are also much smaller. In fact one floppy on the left side can hold the entire wordstar files and you still have the hole right side floppy for your documents. I wrote my PhD dissertation on this machine, which is 230 pages long.
It runs on the CP/M, which means a largest variety of application programs were available at that time. The musimp/math for example was a mathematica-like application available for and probably only for the CP/M at that time, and it worked beautifully on my Osborne to give me great mathematical insights.

Many things can be said about the IMSAI 8080 but know this. The first commercial version of CP/M was developed using an IMSAI 8080 by a little company in Torrance Ca called Vista Computer Company. We invented the phantom rom concept which is built into every PC and mac ever built. We also created the format standard that is used to this day by all PCs.
The IMSAI 8080 was a great machine for it's day but it was NOT pin for pin compatible with the MITS Altair bus. True it was an s-100 bus but every company at the time used the s-100 buss but the lines were hooked up differently so you could not just pull an s100 board out of one brand of computer and expect it to work in another. We offered a turn key CP/M system and had customers ship their computer to us so that we could customize our product to their computer. Subsequent owners of the same machine got step by step instructions allowing them to mod our board to work with their computer or we could make the mods when they ordered the OS.
It was only when the PC came out was there any real standardization of busses. Apple could have owned the whole world but sued companies so the companies all switched to making PC clones

Others have mentioned the Acorn BBC but nobody mentioned the Acorn Archimedes which was based on the Acorn RISC CPU from about 1987 according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acorn_Archimedes). I owned one in about 1990-91. It had a GUI in ROM and was amazingly fast compared to other computers of the time. Going to a PC with Windows 3.1 later was a backward step in terms of the GUI and speed.

Looking at the list on the left-hand side of your page, it would seem that Acorn computers, including the BBC B, had never existed. Is that due to a lack of information?

While Visicalc drew the attention of the Business wonks, the cheap design of the Apple ][ floppy disk with it's tendency to erase disks left in when the power transitioned nearly killed the "PC" business market before it was born! The Industry as a whole held its breath until IBM stepped in and only then would "real" business be conducted on computers.
The Apple ][ disk system controller was all one big prom and the disk head "positioner" was a dimple in a small copper strip following a shallow oval track in the nylon index wheel. The dimple would slide out of the track and mis position. The "soft sectored" disk format that saved on hardware by omitting the index hole sensor was unreliable and the index "tone burst" would easily be wiped and all data lost.
Apple also touted how their use of 8 chip non-parity memory was "more reliable" than IBM using a 9th chip parity. However IBM correctly pointed out that an Apple with a bad memory chip would continue to garble data while an IBM would HALT and protect the data - a BIG selling point with business - note that ALL modern DIMMs are "parity" memory.

I have a non working original Apple Lisa 1. I did a college internship at corporate HQ for Zenith Electronics from 1984-1989. During that time, Zenith had a group called ZDS (Zenith Data Systems). During 1988, ZDS was selling old computers, so my dad (who also worked for zenith) purchased a few old computers cause they looked cool. About 5 years ago, we powered up the Apple Lisa, but without the software disks, it didn't go very far. We recently tried to power it up, and it would not. I understand how rare these are and what I have is the Lisa 1 and keyboard. There could be some other stuff hiding in a box somewhere in the family basement, that I haven't searched for yet. I did snap some photos of the computer and keyboard and uploaded them to Photobucket. What is the best avenue to get this appraised and move forward in selling this rare computer. Thanks for any advice.

I made contact w/an old "friend" today. He is perhaps the only person on planet earth that owns a Radio Electronics RE-Robot, built from plans from the lathe 1980's in said magazine. I'm interested in building the "brain" itself primarily, based on an 80188 cpu. Not very IBM compatible, but a thoroughly kewl vintage project nevertheless. If anyone wants to get in on this, e-mail me.
The Unicorn Robot (early 80s) is also interesting (looks like R2D2). Perhaps if enough people get involved, we can look into that also, and perhaps update it's electronics (w/the 80188 board).

Greetings... my name is Owen and I'm a brand new Jupiter Ace enthusiast. After seeing some videos online and reading the specs, I DLed an emulator and started programming in Ace-Forth. I'm really having fun in emulation, but I want a real machine... I've been a vintage computer enthusiast all my life and was hoping to arrange a trade of some kind. If you know of anyone who has more than one Ace and wants to get a good trade, I have a package I'm willing to offer.
***Package for Trade***
*Boxed TI-99/4a (with all hookups and literature/manuals)
*Speech synthesizer
*joystick adapter
*two joysticks
*Several TI game carts (including 2 programming languages, XB and Editor Assembler)
*A Peripheral Expansion Box (with flexcable interface)
*Navarrone cartridge expander
*Boxed and SEALED RotoRaiders ROMOX cartridge (rare)
eBay value for this package is about $250-$400.
I know the Jupiter Ace is a special machine... which is why I'm looking forward to programming on the REAL thing rather than in emulation. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Dean again! OK, I just took the Atari 800 apart and found the problem with the keyboard. IT'S NOW WORKING! System config: Atari 800 48K, 810 Disk Drive, 410 Cassette Drive, 850 Interface, and a Epson Printer and ALL is working great with over 20 Games/Software Cartridges, 30 plus Disk Games/Software, and several Cassette Software. I have a two year old PC that I wish worked half as good; not bad for a 30 year old PC that has been in storage for about 20 years. Thanks, retirement is great!

I brought an Atari 800 computer back in 1981. It was used for about 10 years without any problems. I replaced it with a Gateway PC and packed the Atari away in a closet (heated) for about 14 years then it was moved to an unheated shop out back (6 years storage). OK, I retired about 2 months ago and getting bored so I pulled the old Atari system out and set it up. I set up the keyboard system, the 5 ½ disk, and display and to my surprise it works (all games including the 5 ½ disk games) except the following keys on the keyboard: Left Side = 1, q, a, and z keys; Right Side = >, =. *, and Atari key )|( . I took the bottom off and blew it out with can air (it was very clean) but these keys are still not working. Any help out there for an old Atari user?
Thank

Hello, I have an NEC APC, dual 8" floppys, in very good condition. I have all the original application disks and documentation. I fired it up yesterday after 25 years of dormancy and it booted and worked perfectly. Any idea on price and where to sell ? I could always put it back to sleep for awhile, or should I look for some needy boat owner that needs an anchor ?

One of the highest selling notebook computers of its time, the Toshiba T1200 was launched in

first notebook computer with a swappable battery pack and was able to run many programs only
a desk top PC could process at the time. The Toshiba T1200 had an original SLP of $6,499.
