Just for background:The disk collection was mostly for IBM PCjr's. My first real home compute. I bought add-on's for Printer port, and extra memory and a hard drive. A friend added memory to make it a 640k unit with a 20 MEG hard drived. 16 color. Played KINGS QUEST, LEISURE SUIT LARRY and SPACE QUEST. Used Manage Your Money on Cartridge. Cost about $1200.00 plus $1200.00 for extras. With out this computer, and the color monitor, I would not have gotten so deep into computers. (Even thou I worked for IBM).

I have come to own what I believe is a pre-cursor to the laptop. I have a NEC Powermate, which is like a small suitcase and weighs quite a bit. I'm trying to find out more about it, but have been unsucessful. The keyboard plugs into the unit with a cord that I can best describe as a phone jack, and it has a floppy drive, although it is for the smaller (hard case) floppies.
Can anyone give me a clue?
Thanks.

Hi. I was just wondering:
according to your site, the Epson HX-20 was introduced in November 1981. But when were we able to buy it (1982, right.. but what month? was it before the 1982 March launch of the Kaypro II?)
the same goes for the 3 models that followed the Kyotronic KC-85.. what model appeared first? Is it true it was the Tandy m100 form radioshack? (I heard it was February 1983).
Thanks in advance for any kind of help in these questions. (I'm just trying to figure out if a seller is telling the truth.. :)

I had to have it. I bought my third computer. It was a C=64, and it was in COLOR!
As it was back then, I had already been making use of this strange online system called "Gopher" which was a collection of online text files. Generally, these were online versions of books from various colleges. I was reading up a storm back then. Imagine, all these text files out there and for free! This was just the coolest!
Even cooler still, was allowing people to dial into my computer using a device called a MODEM. A MODulator/DEModulator that allowed computer to send an analog signal translated into a digital signal. The first modem I got was this thing called a VIC modem wjhich required that you pick up the phone, dial a phone # by hand, listen for a loud and obnoxious screech at the other end, then quickly pull the cord out of the phone, plug it into my modem and keep typing ATA until the modem answers.
Once connected, we were transfering text WITH COLOR, at a blistering 300 bits per second. Now that is BITS not BYTES. 8 bits per byte. That meant 38 letters per second, including error correction and what not. The text was actually appearing across your screen faster than you could read it normally.
I remember the first time I tried tweaking my connection speed. I knew I could beat 300 baud (baud was another term for bits per second). I was able to actually get an additional 150 bist per second, but hardly anyone else knew how to do it, so the point was mute.
Not too long after this, modem communication grew exponentially. 300 baud disappeared very quickly, replaced VERY briefly by 500 baud. That became 1200 baud for a while, which was supposed to be the fastest speed. However, being a tweaker, I managed to get a 2400 baud modem working on my C=64. Now generally speaking the RS-232 port on the 64 could not handle 2400 baud. BUT, when you turned off error checking, and fenagled your way around some of the more blatant filtering and such, you were getting MUCH faster than 1200 baud. I wish I could remember the exact speed we were pulling off, but it was so long ago now.
I remember being the only person I knew, for almost a year, that was able to connect a HARD DRIVE to my c=64!! It was a massive 20 Megabytes! I fit my ENTIRE C=64 software library onto this drive.
I remember the days of getting together in small groups with other c=64 owners and "trading" warez.
In my "HEY DAY", meaning when I was a minor, I was running an "elite" BBS. In fact, I say with some remembered pride, I was running one of the only two phone line, 2400 baud BBS's with a 20 Megabyte Lt.Kernal hard drive on a piece of BBS legendary software called COLOR64.
Let me know if anyone remembers my board. It was called the STORE 64, because I spent MANY all night sessions running down the street to the STORE 24 for pepsi and junk food. It was also called The Aramus Empire for a while, but flamers kept calling it The AramASS Empire so I changed it. ROFL.
God, those were the days. Looking back now, that computer was SO slow. SO weak. SO pitiful compared to today. BUT. It was all we knew, and we LOVED IT. I still love it. I wish I was not a disabled person because I would go and find an old C=64 system and set it all up again.
I was a C=64 BASIC GOD. I knew the 64 BASIC language inside out, upside down and backwards. I had literally done everything there was to do with that language at one point or another. I wrote my own BBS program. I wrote a war dialer *ahh the days of being a minor*.
There was a sense of community back in the c=64 days that has been lost. I truly miss those days. When I thought I knew everything.

Where are the Amstrads in your timeline? They outsold the C64 in the UK, sold several million worldwide and the company went on to buy up Sinclair's computer business in 1986.
The Amstrad CPC464 was released in 1984. Followed by CPC664 & CPC6128. They also sold the PCW range of office computers but I don't know much about them.
Sysop says: It's more of a my-computer timeline than an every-computer timeline, but once I finally acquire an Amstrad (hint hint), it would definitely be included.

Hey -- just wanted to offer some information for your site. I noticed the picture of the ZX81 being used as a doorstop. The writeup simply says "some people found them more useful as doorstops" but there's more to the story than that.
For a short period of time, Commodore was offering a $100 cash credit towards the purchase of one of their computers if you traded in any existing computer. They quickly found themselves with a warehouse full of Sinclairs, which really did end up getting used as doorstops at Commodore corporate headquarters.
That event really was where the use of the word "doorstop" in this context originated.

Does anyone have interest in an Intertec Data Systems Compustar VPU-30? This, I believe, was the first networkable microcomputer. It used a 30 or 300Mb?? hard disk and RS-232 to daisychain up to 255 computers and to share the hard disk. This unit has dual 8" floppy drives (typically one for OS and application other for data), a customized keyboard for use with WordStar and operates on a customized CP/M operating system. Have WordStar, dBase, software and manuals, with system manual. Unit needs CRT power supply repair. Also have serial daisy wheel printer with 15" platen, daisy wheels and carbon film ribbon cassettes.

I've been on this site quite a couple times to look for information about old computers. I own a Compaq Portable III myself and still find it more fun to play PacMan or any other old game on that computer than a new one. Anyway, I have a question about a portable computer I found at work. It's a Rein 420 SLC, I've searched for it on google but i couldn't find any site that has specifications or any information on it. Does someone have some information about this computer? This is the information I could read on the bottom side:
Model: 420 SLC
Date: January 1988
There are 2 logo's of "Rein", one on the lid and one just above the keyboard. For the rest it only reads "Laptop Computer 420 SLC" and it has some LED's for the HDD etc. It would be nice if anyone had some information and what it's main purpose was back in the days (seeing it is portable)

I purchased a DEC Rainbow 100+ around 1984 if I remember correctly. It was touted to be a superior computer over the IBM PC because it had dual processors 80/88 I think. It was sold more as a business tool rather than a home device and DEC stupidly kept their design architecture to themselves and would not allow for 3rd party development of software and hardware and thus its demise. They wanted like 3 times the price for hardware upgrades that stuff for the IBM PC was selling for. May have a photo or two but will have to search for em.

Help/or maybe Sell...Hi!Came across an old "Osbourne 3 laptop"(not labeled as an Encore)..can't seem to find much of anything about that model other than it seems to be compatible with IBMs of the era in 1984-1985.Anybody have a good place to find out what software is needed,value?,....has two 5-1/4(size) drives,9600(?)modem(takes two prong phone plug),speed(?)..seems to work fine and tries to load, but I only have the original paper drive protectors.Screen comes up,calculator, time zones and scheduler, buttons, and keyboard seem to work fine,etc..appears in really nice condition.Even the battery doesn't appear bad..but with it's age, doubt if it is any good..could probably be rebuilt(12 volt),contacts and outer case look fine, almost new.
I've tried searching the net with Google but can only find VERY limitted details(one picture and a couple paragraphs about that "specific" model,a lot more about the Osbourne 1.. anyway..thanks for any help!

I have a couple of Beehive B103 terminals that were made for InfoRex corp that I would like to find homes for.
They are not currently working properly, although they were working prior to being stored. The CRTs display characters, but it is random and flashing. Probably just need a thorough cleaning.
I'm offering them for no charge other than packing and shipping .... although I found that packaging and shipping costs are significant. The ideal situation would be if someone could pick them up. I'm in the Kansas City MO area.

Hello,
I'd like to formally announce the new Vintage Computer and Gaming Marketplace located at http://marketplace.vintage-computer.com
This new addition to http://www.Vintage-Computer.com will hopefully grow to become the preferred venue for buying and selling vintage computing and gaming gear on the net.
The software used for the marketplace was chosen for its simplicity and features which make it a viable alternative to the other, more generalized, auction and sales venues on the web.
Items can be posted in auction format (buy-it-now can be used for flat-rate sales) with descriptions and a photo gallery for each. Bids on items within the last two minutes of an auction will extend that auction by 30 minutes, making sniping a thing of the past.
NOTE: There are absolutely no charges for posting listings to the marketplace or for buying items listed there. The venue is completely free!
I believe that the popularity of the Vintage Computer Forums and the Vintage-Computer.com site will help drive buyers and sellers to the new marketplace to the benefit of the entire vintage computing and gaming community.
I encourage anyone interested or potentially interested in buying or selling vintage computing and/or gaming gear to please visit the new site, sign up and, by all means, tell your friends!
Thank you,

Looking at the side-bar list, missing is the Heathkit H89, which was available in kit form in 1980? 1981? I believe it had an Intel 8088 processor, 16K of memory and ran a precursor to CP/M called HDOS (for Heath operating system). This all-in-one unit had an exceptionally nice keyboard and was supplanted by the Z-100, sans monitor, which ran either HDOS or CP/M. "PIP *.*" Anyone?
I had both, and with the Z-100 I used 2 8 inch floppys.

I have an old Ferguson Big Board system (similar to Xerox 820) that I would like to find a good home for... it is installed in a metal case with two 8" DSDD drives (as I recall). Includes a Heath/Zenith 12" monitor, a homebrew keyboard, and a 5.25" floppy disk drive adapter board, and lots of floppies. I've got CP/M-80, Wordstar, Ecosoft C, DR PL/I, and probably a few utilities on the floppies. I haven't fired it up in a few years, but it worked the last time I checked. It's heavy (60 lbs?!), so local pickup is preferred; if someone wants it shipped they'll have to pay for that (and it won't be cheap!). Also, I might be able to make copies of some of the disks for other enthusiasts, assuming that it still boots. I found no reference to the Oric-1 and Oric Atmos computers. About the same era as ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 but succesfully combined the advantages of both (correct keyboard, good BASIC, good sound and graphics). As far as I know, it was rather popular in the UK. Google for it, you'll find references.
Also, the Swedish ABC-80 is also lacking. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABC_80 .

Hi,
I've just spent a couple of hours browsing through this great site, but the real reason i'm here is that I'm having a clearout and have rediscovered my 2 Osborne OCC 1 portable computers.
These are the 'facelifted' version and have 2 x Double Density 5.25 Floppy drives and 5inch grey screen. I have 1 set of the orginal Osborne Diskettes - CP/M System & Utility, WORDSTAR/MAILMERGE, DBASE II (on two diskettes), SUPERCALC, CBASIC/MBASIC, and DIAGNOSTICS 2.00. There are also 5 other backup/work disks.
One of the systems is in perfect working order, complete and pretty much unmarked for it's age (25+ years old) the other isn't working, I seem to remember one Diskette drive failed to read last time it was fired up, and it now doesn't seem to power up at all, this one alos has door missing from the the powerr connection and both the brigfhtness and contrast knobs are missing - though they may turn up in a box somewhere.
Both have what looks to be an optional External Monitor connection - EXMON ??
What I don't have are any manuals.
So, Any ideas on what these are worth - taking note of the fact I am in the UK, and they are heavy !
Thanks,
Graham

Does anyone have the CP/M operating system for KAYPRO II that he could email to me? My old disk seems to be unreadable. Better: could you write it onto a fresh 5-1/4" disk?
An alternative: does anyone want the computer?

Commodore 8032, alas, with broken neck on picture tube. We also have the working disc drive 2040, tractor printer 2022, Spinwriter 7700 series, WordPro software, a few games, original manuals, cables. Any idea if we should toss the lot or is there anyone interested in picking up some of these items?

Hi,I recently inherited a vintage laptop computer, the Epson HX-20. It seems to be in perfect condition, either it was not used much or very well taken care of. It comes with the optional built-in micro cassette recorder, the original 6 Volt adaptor and brown plastic carrying case.
After some searching on the internet, I have come to the conclusion, that I have something of value, since it is considered the first laptop computer. Please let me know what a fair value for this item might be. I am interested in selling it to someone, who will appreciate its worth as a collector's item or to someone who might still enjoy using it.
Thank you in advance for your input or interest.

Just a quick note on a few things that might be of interest on the Atari 520ST page. First off, when the 520ST came out, it had a larger brother. The Atari 1040ST, with 1MB of RAM and a built in 3.5" floppy drive. Later on Atari introduced the 520STFM and 1040STFM. These were basically improved versions of the basic ST architecture. As with their standard, the 520STFM has 512K of RAM and the 1040 had a full MB. Both the 520STFM and the 1040STFM had one internal 3.5" floppy drive and a proprietary port to plug in a second one in the back. Also the FMs had built in Frequency Modulators to run their video directly to a TV set. Additionally, both machines could run Macintosh software using a device called a Mac-In-Sac. This basically used Apple Mac OS ROM chips, in the device, to bypass the built in TOS/GEM OS of the Atari. In effect it turned it into an approximately 85% compatable Mac clone. To further increase usability, you could also get one of several PC emulators to use PC compatible (x86/DOS) software on the PC. The most popular of these was called PC-Ditto. The largest incentive to buy an ST however was of particular interest to musicians. The STs had a fully compatable set of MIDI ports built into every model. And some of the best Midi sequencing software on the market at the time was written for the ST. One more thing, near the end, Atari also produced the Mega ST series. these were basically suped up STs with a lot of additional memory. The Mega ST 4 had a whopping 4MB of RAM, which was pretty amazing in that day and age.
I hope this helps.

I have an Epson HX-20 in full working order, with the brown case, charger, a number of Basic programs, a ROM module, the two standard handbooks, and Hartnell's book 'Making the most of your HX20'. It is fitted with a (removable) expansion unit, in which there is an installed INTEXT ROM.
If anyone is interested in buying it, I would be happy to hear from them by e-mail: any sensible offer will be considered, but you must remember the cost of shipping from Poland, and of course I will need payment up front (sorry, but you know it makes sense). Nice little machine, but I am anxious for it to go to a good home.
I also have an FX80 printer which was bought to work with it, including both RS232 and parallel interface boards, leads, and several books. Same conditions apply - it is quite small, but heavy!

I also have a Lisa that I regretably changed to a MAC-XL as I needed a computer back in 1990 that ran mac software...whats it worth - any ideas? Do I need to insure it? I still have the original front panel though.
thanks muchly
Paul

I noticed that someone was looking for a power unit for the HX20 laptop. Easy to substitute, it's 6VDC out at 600mA, to a coaxial power plug with the negative line to the centre.

Your page on the HX20 omitted the fact that it could be fitted with an expansion module (on the left-hand side), and the tape unit could be replaced with a plug-in ROM. You quote the O/S as being Basic, actually it was a hex thing called Monitor ... how do I know? I was one of the original salesmen, and my machine's working here now.
You also commented on the small screen ... it is a 'virtual screen', actually very large if you steer round it with the direction keys ... takes 5 minutes to get used to this.

I have found my old Intertec Superbrain (1980 vintage) lying unused for 20+ years under a dust cover (& scores of old floppies). Plugged it in - screen seems 'live' - but no message appears ('Insert disc in Drive A' or something like that), and system disc doesn't seem to work. What do I need to do to get my old friend working again????

Hi,
I have some information on an old floppy that I'd like to access. It was originally done on a Macintosh SE. Our SE is long dead. I borrowed an old Mac 5200 but it seems to have died as well. Does anyone out there have any suggestions or an old working MAC that I can purchase (cheap) to access my disk?
Thanks

Your initial comment on the IBM 5100 says it was the first "self contained" computer. Actually we analyzed the HP 9830, the Wang 2200 and the AAPL 4000 (a small Toronto company, long ago defunct) while we were designing the 5100. So there were at least those three. The HP and Wang used Basic. The AAPL used APL. I think all of them fit into 4k if you can beleive that.

Hey guys: for the Atari 520ST in 1985 you wrote
"In addition to the 520ST, Atari release the 1040ST, with built-in floppy drive, and 1Meg of RAM (the 520ST has 512K)."
I think Atari don't call her 1040ST but 1040STF (F for built-in floppy). I'm no expert, but i think you have to check.
Anyone interested in a original bill of a Atari 1040STF including monitor SM124 from "Kaufhof", Germany on 30.03.1987 about DM 1.498 (German Mark/something about 800 Euro now). My whole pocket-money of the years 1985-1987.

I am looking for an A4000T. Thats it...
I have a TI 99/4a with the complete packaging including the "Beginners Basic" step-by-step guide and the video module thing with an adapter for the vhf(it will plug into any tv).
I also own an A2000 with 1 3" floppy drive, 1 50mb hard drive, and 1 5.25" floppy drive (all three are internal). The computer contains several expansion cards and I believe expanded ram. I never got around to checkin it out. There are several acessories including the matching monitor, external 3" floppy drive, keyboard, mouse, joystick (works with atari and sega as well). I have alot of programs for the amiga from music creators to DCTV. I also have a bunch of games and a program for xp and one for amos to transfer files between the amiga and pc. Thats how i got the games lol. I dont have the cable available as I had just used 5 different cables spnning 24 feet to connect the two computers,3 of which were needed for something else.
