First, thank you for hosting this site. It is tremendous!
What is an AT&T Globalyst 250? Yes, I have found one in things that I am clearing through, but I don't have any idea what to do with it. I plugged it in and it boots to Windows 98.

I would love to get my hands on a working C64, joysticks and some of the games such as Peanut Butter Panic, Ughlympics and Olympics Summer Games. It would also be sweet if I could get some of the Geo floppy disks.
Any suggestions of where I could get these from and a general price?
Thanks tons.

I've just noticed, whilst looking at the old TRS-80 Model I stuff (the first computer I wrote programs on, albeit it belonging (still) to my parents) that you don't mention the Video Genie range that were (often) very compatible with the early TRS-80's.
I have two examples, so (if you are interested) will take some digital photo's and pass them on (this might take me a while to organise quality images).
My example of the direct equivalent to a TRS-80 Model I Level II 16k example also has the Video Genie version expansion box (not as nice looking as the TRS-80 one; this one looks like some boring white plastic box).
I have an example of the Video Genie equivalent of a TRS-80 Model III, which, in this case, has two 5 1/4 inch disk drives mounted within the monitor casing.
Regards.
Pete

Just wanted to say thanks for the site; it has always been a pleasure to be a frequent visitor, whilst I check my memory (needs an upgrade, I think) on the old computers I used to love, and the innumerable ones I never got to see in the "flesh", as it were, plus the amazingly vast range of those I never heard of before (and often, not even elsewhere) despite starting my curiosity (and very extensive collection) of computers in Feb 1980.
Having recently re-started some retro-programming (This month, from scratch, homebrew tape-based games in the native TI BASIC on one of my TI 99/4a's, with some cross-platform development using my main Amstrad 464 for quicker prototyping, because I have more tools pre-written for it) I did a bit of research (looking for info on the TI 99/4a joysticks) then I found out about the CC-40 so thought I'd do some research via a reputable and trusted site (yours, for example).
I always wish I could contribute more information, as part of my support for your site (I am always short of money, usually due to badly timed collection expansion) but you seem to have it well covered for the systems I am well versed in.
(If I remember or discover any useful information I can add, I'll pass it on.)
Best regards.
Pete

We had been Northstar dealers since 1982, and have a lot of vintage equipment hanging around: Northstar Horizon (3 of them, one of which is the 6/16), with the external (40 pound) hard drive, Televideo 925 and Hzeltine 1420 terminals, Northstar Dimension with Novel 2.0 installed on a 120MB hard drive (!) and internal tape back up along with keyboards and terminals. Also a nice bunch of Northstar software on 5.25 hard sectored floppys and documentation. A few boxes of hard sectored 5.25 floppys are here as well. We also have a few Cypher Tape 10" drives with tapes including the S100 interface boards. Some old IBM PC2 stuff as well, including the external 5.25 floppy drive.

Have a rarely used, in like new condition TRS-80 Model 12 with dual hard drives. Would like to find a home if anyone wants it. Also lots of floppy disks, manuals, and daisy wheel printers (2). The number 5 key on the board quit working. Only used for book keeping twice a year so it was time to update to new software. Hate to throw it all out. Have spare key board from earlier model but plug-in is slightly different. Anyone can pick it up locally or pay shipping.
Thanks,
Roger

I was directed by my employer to discard all of my wonderful Apples, as I was using them with kindergarteners for learning the alphabet/numbers/etc. as I had many of the old programs. I did salvage some of the internal components (cards) as many as I could pull out by hand. I was wondering if there is someone who would like these components, as they still worked up until the time I was told to destroy the computers?

Last Post (promise) for NOW :]
Copied from Gates Gallery at Stanford ... [ Source: http://infolab.stanford.edu/pub/voy/museum/pictures/display/3-5-CROMEMCO.html ]
"CROMEMCO computers were extremely sturdy, encased in cast metal frame. The Cromemco Z-2 (not on dsplay) was built to address the needs of the industrial market, but did one better! The Z-2 line was the first commercially marketed microcomputer certified for use by the U.S. Navy for use aboard ships without major modification.
The unit featured a 22 slot S-100 bus, reinforced card cage with retaining bar, and a hefty power supply. Later versions, as the System Three on display, provided for the mounting of two 5 1/4 inch disk devices (floppies, or later a floppy and a hard drive) into the front panel.
In 1979 CROMEMCO produced the first multi-user operating system for a micro-computer: CROMIX, based on UNIX."
And I have the Z-2H with the twin 5.25" adn 8" Hard Disk Drive.

I would like to say 'Kol Haovot' 'honours' to you for attaining such a great collection.
I once had about 30 of the computers you have mentioned & passed them to a couple of young fellows waiting to enter the Israeli Army as most must do after high school . I hope they made good use of them .I still have a few left, but want to say that the one I like best is the Amstrad 1512 with the progran "word processing for kids" which I still have an assembly & floppy disk copies.
Again happy to have had an opportunity to relate this to you & am proud to call myself a pioneer in computing since I took a course on the IBM 650 Main Frame Computer in 1960 & since 1980 have helped many persons get started in computer use . Shalom to you-all ,Warm regards, shim.b.g. [former sr. member of ISA]

I have a working HP 250 (table model) but the monitor has plenty of dirt spots on the inside of the front glass, making text almost impossible to read and really spoils the whole thing. I opened the plastic front cover (all the dangerous parts are still safely shielded) and it looks like the front glass is not molded to the tube itself which gives me hope it could be repaired. The glass seems glued with the same soft stuff used to seal the windows of your house. Can anyone give some advice on this ? Can I safely remove the front glass, clean it and put it back without risk of breaking anything. The CRT is working perfectly apart from the dirt and I want to be cautious with this as I will never be able to find a replacement CRT for this...

The Otrona Attache 8:16 is accurately described on the site. I would only add that a curious feature of MS-DOS mode was that it used the Z80 on the other side to manage the screen and keyboad, using wormhole ports. I have a complete outfit, including the carrying case, along with a huge collection of diskettes: compilers, databases, editors, etc. I used it heavily for several years, and it still works like a charm (I upgraded to ZCPR).

Hi, Fantastic Website, great info and a real trip back in time... I was in my final years at school when the home computer revolution kicked off. ZX81, Spectrum, BBC Micro and Dragon 32 were my introduction to it all. The market changed rapidly and I remember in Europe in a very small number of years how many different systems came out. I had a ZX81, Spectrum, Dragon 32, Tatung Einstein, Atari 520stfm, Amiga 500, Amiga 2000, Amiga 1200, etc etc
Friends had some of these and/or Comodore PET, Sharp something or other ,Vic20, C64, Amstrad CPC464/664, QL, Amiga 3000 etc
I remember that a whole host of Japanese companies brought out a range of CPM based computers under a banner of MSX... Similar to the Einstein I owned in fact.
It was an exciting time. Computer clubs every week, free exchange of help and advice.
A very different time...
Sorry for rambling on!!! ;)
Cheers

In France during the 80's, we were more into Amstrad CPC concerning 8 bits.
A shame many american don't know about this one.
We also had our ridiculous Thomson line : MO5, TO7, and latter MO6 and TO8... they had a nice network system but that's all.
Just hope you'll find more european Computers.

I stumbled in and seeing that old Datapoint terminal brought back some memories. I remember doing ASCII animation on an old Datapoint terminal in Databus back in the day. Also, I had a 16K Atari 400 that had a GTIA chip in it. I remember jacking around with some code in Creative Computing magazine that drew 3-d cylinders with the 256 colors in the expanded graphics modes. (I think they were 9, 10, and 11. 8 was 2 color high res as I recall). Those cylinders looked like you could grab 'em right out of the screen. I'm glad you have this site up here. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

There are a bug in the description of Sinclair QL.
You say "SuperBASIC has an interesting multi-window appearance, but only when using a monitor for your display device". It's wrong.
In "TV Mode" (pressing F2 at start) you can do multiwindow appearance.
SuperBasic support modify of window size (cannel 1,2,0). If i'm not wrong, channel 0 is the channel for writting commands. Channel 1 is for listing and channel 2 is the output by default. in TV mode window channel 1 and 2 are the same but you can modify both for giving the same appearance of "Monitor Mode" (pressing F1 at start). Also you can say to superbasic where to write. By example : PRINT #0,"hello" writes at channel 0 word "hello".

Thank-you for a wonderful trip down memory lane. It would be nice if you could expand your collection to include more European systems from the 80s, such as the UK-101, Amstrad CPC, Dragon 32, Oric-1, Elan, Memotech and Sharp MZ80k (sp?), all of which significantly influenced the scene on the over side of the Atlantic. Also, the ZX Spectrum sold a lot more than 60,000 units... (see wikipedia).

I love seeing all of the tech I grew up on, include the TRS-80 model III that I managed to lockup in math class.
When I was going to school at DeVry in KC, MO we were issued a Laser Color 2000 computer, a tiny thing with a case not much larger than the keyboard, sort of beige with beige keys and a whopping 4k of memory and if you wanted to fork over the $400 you could expand it by another 4k which plugged into the back of the system by removing a tin plate, there was another port that was rarely used but it seems to me it was a nonstandard serial port that was hidden right below the memory expansion port. The unit only had 3 visible ports, all on the back, a RCA jack for connecting it to a TV and a headphone and mic jack to plug in a portable cassette recorder, the only way to save a program. I wish I knew what happened to it, I seem to remember it going missing just before I moved out of my uncles house to get a place of my own.
Have you ever heard of this particular computer, it may have been made for DeVry by some other company, but it did not have a DeVry logo on it anywhere.
Oh well, just curious.

I see on your want list a Toshiba T1000 laptop. I believe I have one. I haven't looked it at in four or five years but the last time I fired it up, it ran fine. I've recently moved, so it might take me a while to find it among the packed boxes. As I said, it runs and I'm pretty sure I've got 7 or 8 software disks that will run on it. (On it I used to run a little PIM software called Tornado that I liked a lot.) Cosmetically, it's in pretty good shape, but the battery died on it. (Not sure if I kept the battery.) Since I didn't want to spend 100 bucks on a replacement, I just threw together four D-cells that got enough current running through the battery circuit to allow the machine to boot (machine must recoginze a battery current to boot, even though you're using AC). At any rate, I'd like to see that it gets a good home (and reduces the clutter of my electronic work area). As an aside, I also have an Aquarius Home Computer System still in the original box that I'd also like to get to a good home. (Picked this up at a garage sale about 10 years ago and never found the time to fire it up so I don't know if it's working or not--but it wouldn't be hard to find out.) Any interest in a trade on either machine or both? I have no idea what they're worth and don't really care--if I can get a trade that interests me in return, that would be fine. (I don't collect computers but I do have a few favs that I like to play with.)If there is, please put "Old Computer Trade" in the message line of your email; I get lots of email and it's easy to miss an imp one when I'm doing the scanning msg line thing. HI,
i RECENTLY BOUGHT A COMPAQ (HEWLETTE PACKARD) COMPUTER...FROM STAPLES...IT'S REQUIRING I LEARN WINDOWS SEVEN, AND i'D HARDLY LARNED THE WINDOWS XP ON THE OLD DEL---BUT IT CAME BACK AFTER THE VIRUS WAS REMOVED, "NOT CONNECTED" TO THE CD BURNER..SO IT'S NOT MUCH USE TO A SONGWRITER!
i pulled out the OLD MAC 0S9....remembered it had a cdburner in it etc., and since I'm having trouble learning the NEW DVD PROGRAMS on the Compaq and the Del..I thought MAYBE THE OLD MAC could make the DVD conversions I needed. The studo transferred my videos to DVD's but 3 came out VOS, and the other three nobody can upload, are TS-BUP..what? I'm wondering, since I don't like having to learn NEW THINGS (i have trouble with lots of reading, my eyes etc.)...IS THE MAC REALLY THE UNIT TO TRY TO USE? tHE NEW cOMPAQ COMPUTER (hc) FEELS LIKE ABIG PIECE OF PLASTIC..THOUGH THE FLAT screen is great...THE MAC WEIGHS A H ALF O TON...but I'm wondering, should I go back to the Mac to get these things done? I also have audacity, but with the NEW AUDACITY PROGRAM, the only one available now, of course, I'm required to learn a more advanced recording program that I don't even need..I was happy with the old one..maybe I'd be better off with the Mac...
the questions are endless--But people are telling me that the MAC WAS BETTER BUILT THAN ANY OF THE OTHERS, and it' sworth buy ing a new keyboard for it, and trying to go back to the mac...
ANY OPINIONS FROM ANY MUSICIANS OR TECHS OUT THERE, WHO HAVE HAD "THE OLD MAC" RUNNING?

The "early personal computers" you display were all commercial products or kits. Do you have any information on early amateur machines? At least one was built before 1970. My 1959 EMAG III was an amateur personal computer (it was designed and built as my high school science fair entry). It weighed a ton (over 3200 vacuum tubes) and was wired to play checkers. At the time, I decided that constructing a computer with a stored program either would be beyond my means or would result in a trivial toy (such as Berkeley's contraptions) - neither of which I thought would make a very impressive science project.
Although EMAG III played a legal game of checkers, it could have been beaten by one of those hand-held special-purpose checker computers that Sears sold a few years ago. But the thing worked - it got me a scholarship to MIT and an early IBM job.
EMAG III was junked in the late '60s. I hope to write something more extensive about it than what now exists on my website www.diacad.com (way out of date otherwise, by the way). You will find a picture of it there, and a few more details.
I would be most interested in any other amateur computers from this pre-1970 era.

Exciting website. I am on pension and have gathered all the computers I have collected over the years, and now I am playing around with them. 1) I need the DOS files for the RCA Cosmac MS2000 computer. I have plenty of info on the 1802 systems, from the kit to the tape CDP693/4 systems.
2) I have lots of info on the BBC (Games as well) and will be shortly selling 2 of them. The third I keep as a work horse. 3) I also have Epson HX20 portables if anyone is interested. Send me an email.
Cheers Trevor

FANTASTIC!!! I just relived my computer history from the mid-70s through the mid-90s. Thanks. I started with an Altair 8800 (Wish I still had it) and still have a bunch, unfortunately nothing old except a TRS 80 Pocket Computer 6. I did notice that you left out the TI-Pro in you TI list. I had two desk tops and a portable (suitcase) until the mid-90s; my favorite of the old ones. I'll be visiting your site a lot in the future. Keep it going, please.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeos
I guess Zeos is too new. Got it in 1994 when they were selling a discontinued model and a real cheap rate. Still works. Your website is seven years old based on the guestbook. Time for pre-2000 ones. Zeos is a rare one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttCkz4UaPMA
And after seeing that commercial...no wonder the stopped the brand. The ZEOS 386SX was once featured on the cover of PC Magazine, rated as Editor's Choice in its January 30, 1990 issue. I think mine was like a Pentium 90.
I think St Olaf College still had these...Heath/Zenith Z-171
They may still have some buried in storage or in the tunnels.

The altair 8800 is responsible for my defection from electronics to computer programming. I discovered it in the Dec 1974 issue of Popular Electronics (Coming next month: Build your own computer...)
We bench-marked the 8800 against our HP 2000G and I knew right then where my future lie.
Was the proud owner of an IMSAI 8080 "The Cadillac of microcomputers", A Pertec 6800 and worked with most of the micros that came out between 77 and 82. Worked for a little company called Vista Computer company, which marketed the first complete CP/M system that could be used by 8080 ased computers with S100 buses (before Northstar even, our only competitor)
Trivia: the IMSAI, with static memory ran so hot that you could raise a blister by grabbing the board unless you let it cool down. It was also sensitive to electrostatic fields to the point that I built an electrostatic detector just to let us know when to shut the computer down at conventions.
Biggest question I'm glad nobody asks anymore; "What can it do?"

The actual reason the TI 99/4 had such tiny keys was that the CALCULATOR division was given the job of designing it. Give it to the computer division? Oh no, this is just a TOY! Yes, I worked in the same building as TI HELP and the calculator design & build section. Oh, and let us not forget. Run the CPU output through the video chip, thus cutting CPU speed in half. Finally, lets make the Cartage connector in three plug together pieces!
I still have three 4A's. One a Black & silver, the other two that ugly putty brown color. As well as the expansion system. Do they work? Donno, but I'm keeping them.
